چکیده

We present the results of high precision, high resolution (R∼68000) optical observations of the short-period (4d) eccentric binary system Alpha Virginis (Spica) showing the photospheric line-profile variability that in this system can be attributed to non-radial pulsations driven by tidal effects. Although scant in orbital phase coverage, the data provide S/N>2000 line profiles at full spectral resolution in the wavelength range ∆λ4000–8500Å, allowing a detailed study of the night-to-night variability as well as changes that occur on ∼2 hr timescale. Using an ab initio theoretical calculation, we show that the line-profile variability can arise as a natural consequence of surface flows that are induced by the tidal interaction. Tidal Flows from Asynchronous Rotation in Binaries

Asynchronous rotation in binary stars produces non-radial oscillations that are known to cause observable variability on orbital timescales. The horizontal perturbations of the surface velocity fields are referred to as “tidal flows”. In this paper we illustrate the manner in which tidal flows perturb the surface velocity field from that of uniform rotation, using a one-layer stellar model for ...

Simultaneous MOST photometry and high-resolution spectroscopy of Spica, a binary system with a massive β Cephei star component

We present the data from a unique observational study of Spica, a binary system with a primary component of β Cephei type. We exploit simultaneous high-resolution spectroscopic observations and high-precision photometry obtained by the MOST satellite. By disentangling the spectra of this binary, we get an accurate determination of the orbit. Future work includes a full seismic analysis of the s...

Across-channel distribution of the mean and tidal flows in the Khuran Channel, Persian Gulf, Iran

The Khuran Channel, Southern Iran (26°45’N), is a topographically complex channel which is open at both ends. Owning to its particular geometry, this narrow channel is subjected to strong tidal currents.Across-channel distribution of the mean and tidal flows were obtained over a semidiurnal tidal cycle in the Khuran Channel where the highest tidal velocity in the third day of the seco...

Generating Tidal Energy and its Apllications in Northern Coasts of Persian Gulf and Oman Sea

Tidal energy is a clean,  reliable and available  energy that  exits vastly. Moreover, it can be offered to most of coastal  regions and cities. This clean energy  can be used in littoral  zones worldwide , together with islands and coasts ofIransuch as Chabahar. Furthermore, from ecosystem point of view, this energy is useful for increasing coral reefs and also using organic materials in diffe...

Long-term Profile Variability of Double Peaked Emission Lines in Active Galactic Nuclei

We present up to two decades of spectroscopic monitoring of the double-peaked broad Hα emission lines of seven broad-line radio galaxies. These extremely broad, double-peaked lines are successfully modeled by emission from gas in the outer accretion disk, and their profiles vary on timescales of months to years. This variability is a valuable probe for understanding the structure and dynamics o...
